Sino-UK Workshop on Low-Carbon Manufacturing Held in Wuhan
On March 14 and 15, 2018, Sino-UK Workshop on Low-Carbon Manufacturing, co-funded by NSFC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and hosted by Huazhong University of Science and Technology was successfully held in Wuhan. The workshop aims to explore potentials for Sino-UK collaboration in low-carbon manufacturing and put forth priority areas for collaboration. 15 representatives from UK and 16 representatives from China, coming from diverse scientific backgrounds such as machinery, chemical engineering, material, metallurgy, architecture, attended the meeting, as well as representatives from EPSRC, UKRI China Office,Bureau of International Cooperation and the Department of Engineering and Material Science of NSFC.
Prof. Che Chengwei, Deputy Director of the Department of Engineering and Material science and James Fleming, leader of the ESPRC Energy team gave two welcome speeches at the opening ceremony respectively. Che gave an introduction of the current situation of energy consumption in China, NSFC’s early-stage funding in low-carbon manufacturing, the prospect of reducing energy consumption as well as the strategic goal. James Fleming introduced the basic situation of EPSRC and energy team.
The meeting focused on the four themes, namely, significance of low-carbon manufacturing, major obstacles for low-carbon manufacturing development, inadequacies of basic theory of low-carbon manufacturing and the potential collaborative areas for China and UK. After two days of in-depth discussions, participants summarized the major areas for collaboration and voted for the most important areas, making contributions to finalizing the priority areas for collaborations.
